The Human Body

Reference Part 1

This reference table details the main parts of the human body, their function, percentage of water and also details the importance of adequate hydration for each.

Our Body - Water Composition Tables: Next to Part 2, Jump to Part 3

Organ/System Main Function Percentage Water Importance of Water
Blood Is the conveyor of oxygen, nutrients hormones and antibodies to the cells. Between 80% and 90% water Water assists proper circulation, helps maintain flexibility of the blood vessels and pH balance. Good circulation means good overall health, reflected in the complexion, the condition of hair, nails and skin, energy levels, mental ability. Water dilutes the concentration of sugar in the blood (high blood sugar reduces immunity).
Bones Living tissue that gives us our structural support. Approx. 22% water Water helps to maintain bone density, preventing osteoporosis. Lubricates joints, prevents and relieves rheumatoid arthritis.
Brain Essential part of the central nervous system; receives, organises and distributes information to the body. Seat of emotions and intellect. Approx 85% water Water is essential to the body to create hydroelectric energy, particularly in the brain. Sufficient intake prevents migraines through the removal of toxins from the body. Water is recognised as being effective in alleviating depression (enabling the production of serotonin), anxiety and chronic fatigue syndrome. It helps to maintain concentration. Proper hydration protects against strokes and related disorders like brain damage and Alzheimer's.
Cells Minute biological unit, existing both independently and as part of organ/ tissue mass. Centres of growth, development and regeneration. Almost completely water- most of the body's water is found in the cells (approx 46%) and in the fluid surrounding them (approx 23%). Water is the most important nutrient for maintaining cellular integrity and communication.
Digestive System Group of organs that contrive to break down and absorb food. Separating vital nutrients from potentially harmful waste products.   Dehydration can weaken the walls of the colon, causing waste water to be released back into the system and stressing the liver and kidneys.
Ear Organ of hearing.   Fluid fills the inner ear which translates the vibrations from the ossicles (very small bones) into electrical impulses. The components of the ear are not only instrumental to hearing, but also to balance.
Eyes Organs of sight Approx 95% water Puffiness and dark circles around eyes are caused by fluid retention and toxins in the blood which in turn are caused by dehydration. Fluid around the eyeballs allows for movement and protects against shock and foreign bodies. Water is important in transporting nutrients and oxygen to the cornea. Migraines can result from a lack of water in the eyes.
